Re-dooring is the process of removing all existing doors and drawer fronts from your kitchen and replacing them with new ones that have been stained or painted to match your existing cabinet boxes. Since the doors and fronts constitute the great majority of the visible portions of your kitchen, simply updating your door style can have a profound impact on your kitchens overall appearance. For example, replacing old, tired and worn out flat panel shaker doors with a new style like a raised panel can make a less expensive kitchen look like something really special. Glazing or other faux effects can be done to the doors for that added touch.
The limitation of a "just re-dooring" project is that you generally have to stay with the same stain colour or paint colour your kitchen cabinet boxes currently have on them. So if you wanted to change your doors and your stain or paint colour, you would either need to have your boxes refinished as well, or you can opt for a total reface. If you want to change your stain colour, then a reface is in order. For the DIY who wants to paint their own cabinet boxes but leave the doors to the pro's, this could be the most affordable way to update your kitchen - we'll take care of your new doors and leave the site work to you.
With both refacing and redooring, modifications can be made to your kitchen such as replacing your existing crown moldings with new ones, making minor layout modifications and adding or removing cabinet boxes. Hardware can also be changed - for example, upgrading to soft close hinges and drawer slides.
Both refacing and redooring will allow you to completely change the overall look of your kitchen. Both options are far more affordable than a complete kitchen replacement. What you should consider when deciding whether to reface or redoor is the outcome you'd like to achieve.
If you're set on having a stained kitchen and you want to change your stain colour, then refacing is your only option. However if you like your stain or paint colour but not your door style, then redooring is going to be far more affordable, since new doors can simply be ordered, stained and finished to match your existing cabinet boxes, and installed for you when they're finished.
As far as cost goes, both refacing and refinishing are more expensive options than simply redooring because in both cases work needs to be performed on-site (either veneering the boxes and edgebanding or refinishing them). If you want to change your stain colour, then refacing is what you should be looking into. If you want a solid colour, solid colour with a glaze or any other type of custom solid finish, then replacing doors and refinishing your boxes may be your best option.
