At Arcon Finishing, we streamline the refinishing process to minimize the distruption a kitchen renovation makes to your daily routine - reducing what could take months for a new kitchen install to a mere week and a half.
Step 1: Dissasembly
The first step in the process is to mark all doors and drawer fronts so we’ll know where they belong when it comes time to re-install them. We then remove all doors, drawer fronts, hinges, hardware, handles and other removable items from the cabinet boxes and transport the doors to our shop where we perform the majority of the refinishing work. This reduces the amount of time we need to be in your home and minimizes the overall distruption to your daily routine.
Step 2: Cleaning
Next, we have to make sure your cabinets are clean and free of any oils, waxes and other contaminants that build up on cabinets over time, so the finish coats will adhere properly to the surfaces. Without properly completing this essential step, the finish could fail prematurely resulting in cracking or chipping of the finish.
Step 3: Basecoating
When the cabinets are properly prepared and all surfaces in the kitchen have been masked off and protected from overspray, we apply either a base coat, a sealer, or a primer which helps to seal out any remaining oils that may have penetrated through the finish and into the wood. It also creates a strong bond between the original finish and the new one which is applied overtop.
Step 4: Finishing the boxes
Because we use fast drying products, the completion of the ‘skeleton’ of the kitchen can often be completed in just one to two days. For larger kitchens, we’ll break the project up into a three day process - removing all masking materials, tools and equipment and cleaning up at the end of each day, leaving you with complete access to your kitchen. This significantly minimizes any distrption to your daily routine.
Step 5: Doors and fronts
Repeating the same process we used in your kitchen, we refinish all doors and drawer fronts at our shop. Doors are thoroughly cleaned and sanded, base coated and given 2 or more finishing coats. We also repair minor damage and cracks so they’ll look extra sharp when they’re finished. This can take around 4 days for an average sized kitchen.
Step 6: Reinstallation
When all doors and drawers are finished, we return and reinstall them in your kitchen - as well as all hardware, hinges and handles. The total process from start to finish usually takes between 3 and 7 working days for 2 men, depending on the size of your kitchen, number of doors, chosen colour(s) and finishes and other factors.
